What do we mean by 'Statistics'?

This beginner-level Stats Starter helps define the term "statistics" and how it is used.
Stats Starters are easily digestible overviews that allow learners to explore a single foundational statistics concept and its application to forensic evidence. Each Stats Starter video includes an introduction and overview of the concept, statistical models and theories, and examples and applications.
Stats in the Courtroom

This Foundational Learning opportunity is designed specifically for legal professionals—though it's applicable to anyone navigating forensic evidence in court—and walks through a variety of statistical concepts as applied in the courtroom. Dr. Alicia Carriquiry discusses:
- Definitions of probability and various probability concepts;
- Various statistical inference concepts;
- Limitations to forensic examination as expert opinion; and
- Definitions and forensic applications of the two-stage approach, likelihood ratio, and Bayes' Theorem.
This learning opportunity is on demand and available immediately.
Statistical Thinking for Forensic Practitioners
⏱ 8 hours
In this asynchronous short course, Dr. Hal Stern introduces fundamental concepts from probability and statistics—motivated by forensic issues—followed by a detailed investigation of how they apply to assess forensic evidence's probative value.
This course should take learners approximately eight hours to complete and is available immediately to learn at your own pace.
Forensic Stats 101 (Enrollment fee required)

This 30-hour course equips you to address the core concepts of probability and statistics and their application to today's issues in forensic science—no matter your prior knowledge of statistics. The course is self-paced and available for you to start immediately.
